What Are Good Research Topics in Psychology?

Quick answer

A good psychology research topic names a population, a psychological construct, and a relationship, experience or outcome that can be measured or explored. "Social media and mental health" is a subject area. "Association between passive social media use and anxiety symptoms among undergraduate students" is a researchable topic.

Five examples that meet that test:

  1. Rumination, sleep quality and depressive symptoms in young adults (topic 7)

  2. Handwritten versus typed note-taking and delayed recall among first-year undergraduates (topic 1)

  3. Teachers' beliefs about generative AI tools in secondary schools (topic 21)

  4. Coach communication style and athlete motivation among university-level athletes (topic 66)

  5. Experiences of family caregivers of adults with schizophrenia in urban southern India (topic 8)

Which topic is best for research in psychology?

The best topic is one you can finish: it fits your supervisor's expertise, has an accessible sample, uses established measures, carries low ethical risk, and still leaves something new to say.

Each topic carries a two-part method tag: paradigm · design, for example Quantitative · Survey, Quantitative · Experiment, Qualitative · Interview study, Mixed Methods · Survey + interviews or Review · Systematic review. Some topics also carry a flag for extra access, ethics, instrument or safeguarding checks. These are suggested designs, not requirements. Every item is a suggested research idea, not a claim that the area is unexplored. Check the recent literature before you commit.

133 Psychology Research Topics by Subfield

Explore psychology research topics organized by subfield, with suggested research methods to help you choose and develop a suitable study topic.

How to read the tags: each topic ends with a method tag (paradigm · design). Flags mark extra checks: Access (clinical, prison or juvenile-justice permissions), Ethics (deception and debriefing, consent and assent, trial registration), Instrument (whether the usual measure is free, paid or restricted; tools such as the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 are widely free, while Wechsler tests and Beck inventories are licensed or restricted, so always check the current terms) and Safeguarding (sensitive topics). Studies with school students, such as topics 22, 23, 25, 31, 94 and 96, require appropriate parental/guardian consent and child assent, along with applicable ethics and safeguarding procedures.

Psychology Research Topics With Two Variables

A two-variable topic links one independent (predictor) variable to one dependent (outcome) variable. It is the simplest structure for a project, assignment or first paper.

Topic Independent variable Dependent variable
1. Note-taking mode and recall Handwritten vs typed Delayed recall score
3. Breathing exercise before a test Exercise vs no exercise Test performance
22. Retrieval practice Quizzing vs rereading Long-term retention
34. Pretend play Frequency of play Vocabulary size
54. Leading questions Question wording Memory distortion
66. Coach communication Style of communication Athlete motivation

Psychology Research Topics With Three Variables

Three variables let you ask why or for whom an effect happens. A predictor affects an outcome, and a mediator (explains the link), moderator (changes its strength) or control variable (held constant) is added.

Topic Predictor Third Variable (suggested role) Outcome
7 Rumination and depression Rumination Mediator Sleep quality Depressive symptoms
14 Passive social media use Passive use Mediator Social comparison Self-esteem
20 Self-efficacy and exams Academic self-efficacy Mediator Procrastination Exam performance
59 Burnout at work Burnout Mediator Job satisfaction Turnover intention
64 Job insecurity Job insecurity Moderator Perceived organisational support Mental wellbeing
78 Perfectionism Perfectionism Mediator Fear of failure Test anxiety

Not every study needs exactly two or three variables. Add a variable only when your theory needs it and your sample can support the analysis. The mediator and moderator roles in the table are suggestions: the topic titles do not state them, and your theory should decide them. Caution: mediation tested on cross-sectional data cannot establish the order of cause and effect, so use longitudinal or experimental designs if you want to claim that one variable leads to another.

Qualitative and Quantitative Research Topics in Psychology

The two most common approaches, with examples from the topic list.

01

Qualitative Research Topics in Psychology

Qualitative research explores experiences, perceptions and meanings through interviews, focus groups or open-ended data, and analyses them with thematic analysis, phenomenology or case study designs. Good qualitative research topics in psychology, including those for college students, ask "how" and "what is it like" rather than "how much".

Examples from the list 8, 12, 17, 24, 36, 46, 52, 61, 67, 82, 87, 106, 111
02

Quantitative Research Topics in Psychology

Quantitative research measures variables and tests relationships, group differences or predictors using validated scales, experiments or surveys and statistical analysis.

Examples from the list 7, 20, 44, 49, 59, 77, 92, 112

How to choose between qualitative and quantitative psychology research

If your question is about… Lean toward Because
Experiences, meanings, how people make sense of something Qualitative You need depth and the participant's own words
Relationships, differences, predictors, effects Quantitative You need measurement and statistical testing
Both the "how much" and the "why" Mixed methods Each strand answers a different part of the question
Existing evidence only Systematic review No new participants are needed
?

Choose the design that answers your question, not the one that sounds more scientific, and check what your department expects.

CHOOSE BY PROGRAMME

Psychology Research Topics by Academic Level

Scope and methodological demand rise with level, but a bigger topic is not a better one. A tightly designed college project can be stronger than an overreaching PhD proposal.

+

Review or presentation instead of new data? Systematic-review topics (4, 91, 95, 115) suit review paper writing. For class presentations, choose topics with one clear finding to explain, such as 1, 2 or 39.

Current and Emerging Psychology Research Topics

"Trending" is only useful if there is evidence behind it. The table separates what is established, what is emerging, and what is only a suggested idea.

01 Emerging · Correlational

Short-Form Video, Attention and Mental Health

Short-Form Video and Attention: A 2025 Psychological Bulletin meta-analysis (Nguyen et al., 2025, doi:10.1037/bul0000498) pooled 71 studies and 98,299 participants. Heavier short-form video use was associated with poorer attention and inhibitory control (moderate associations) and, on average, with poorer mental health (a weak association). Findings are correlational, and few studies examined cognitive areas beyond attention and inhibitory control.

02 Emerging · Contested

Generative AI Chatbots in Mental Health

AI Chatbots in Mental Health: A 2025 NEJM AI randomised trial (210 adults, waitlist control) reported symptom improvement with a purpose-built chatbot and called for larger trials. A published reply questioned the waitlist control and lack of independent evaluation.

03 Emerging

Generative AI in Education

Generative AI in Education: As of 3 October 2026, Frontiers in Psychology lists open article collections on teachers and generative AI and on AI-supported classroom dialogue. This shows active research interest, not established effects.

04 Emerging

Cyberpsychology and Online Behaviour

Cyberpsychology and Online Behaviour: As of 3 October 2026, Frontiers lists a second volume on cyberpsychology and social dynamics in the connected world.

05 Policy context; evaluation is a suggested idea

Tele-Mental Health and Access to Care

Tele-Mental Health Access: India's national Tele-MANAS service, launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in October 2022, provides a free 24×7 tele-mental-health helpline. Evaluation studies are a possible direction.

06 Emerging

Digital and Hybrid Work Psychology

Hybrid Work Psychology: As of 3 October 2026, Frontiers lists an open collection on extra-role behaviour and knowledge work in digital organisations.

07 Established

Burnout, Academic Stress, Resilience and Mindfulness

Burnout and Academic Stress: Long-standing themes with a large literature; new value comes from new populations, mechanisms or interventions.

INDIA-SPECIFIC CONTEXT

Psychology Research Topics in India

Indian contexts are useful when they shape the research question, not as decoration, so only topics whose titles name an Indian context are listed here. Check the literature (APA PsycInfo, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Shodhganga, the repository of Indian theses) before assuming a gap exists.

How to make an India-focused topic genuinely researchable

Define the population, language or cultural context, sampling frame, validated instrument and ethics pathway before treating a local angle as a research gap.

How to Choose a Psychology Research Topic

Choose a subfield, find a problem, check the literature for a gap, define the population and variables, pick a method, test feasibility and ethics, then write the research question and confirm it with your supervisor. The table follows one running example.

01

Choose a subfield

What to do: Pick an area you can read and supervise.

Running example: Social psychology, media.

02

Identify a problem

What to do: Find a real issue.

Running example: Students feel worse after scrolling.

03

Review recent literature

What to do: Read reviews and recent studies.

Running example: Passive vs active use research.

04

Identify a research gap

What to do: Look at limitations, untested groups, and conflicting results.

Running example: Few Indian hostel-resident samples.

05

Select population

What to do: Be specific.

Running example: Undergraduate hostel residents.

07

Decide the approach

What to do: Quantitative, qualitative or mixed.

Running example: Quantitative survey.

08

Assess feasibility

What to do: Sample access, time, tools, and cost.

Running example: Two colleges, one semester.

09

Consider ethics

What to do: Consent, anonymity, and distress protocol.

Running example: Anonymous form, helpline details (for example Tele-MANAS, 14416, India's free 24×7 tele-mental-health line).

10

Write the research question

What to do: One clear sentence.

Running example: See below.

11

Validate with a supervisor

What to do: Check fit and originality.

Running example: Adjust scope.

12

Build the proposal

What to do: Objectives, hypothesis, method, and analysis.

Running example: Next section.

How is passive social media use associated with anxiety symptoms among undergraduate students?

Hypothesis

Students reporting more passive social media use will report higher anxiety scores.

Research Questions in Psychology

A psychology research question is a focused, answerable question about how constructs relate, differ or change in a defined population. It is narrower than a topic: the topic sets the area, the question sets what you will actually find out. Write it after you have fixed the population and variables, and make sure your method can answer it.

Subfield Example research question
Clinical How does a four-week behavioural activation programme change low mood among college students?
Social Does anonymity change how hostile online comments are?
Educational Does retrieval practice improve long-term retention more than rereading in school students?
Cognitive How does working memory load affect susceptibility to decision bias?
Positive Does gratitude journaling reduce academic stress across an exam season?
Counseling What do trainee counsellors experience during clinical supervision?
Criminal How are moral disengagement and cyberbullying perpetration related in adolescents?
Forensic Do leading questions distort eyewitness memory?
Organisational How does job insecurity relate to wellbeing, and does organisational support change that link?
Sports Do pre-performance routines lower competitive anxiety in university players?

Each link should follow from the one before. If you cannot state your objectives in one sentence each, the topic is still too broad. Zonduo's research proposal guidance and research methodology support cover this chain in detail. For a summarised research plan, see Zonduo's synopsis development service.

Before data collection, involve your institutional ethics committee; for health-related work in India, the ICMR National Ethical Guidelines for Biomedical and Health Research Involving Human Participants (2017) are the usual reference. If your study is an intervention trial (topics 9, 11, 63, 110 and 119), ask your ethics committee whether it needs registration with the Clinical Trials Registry – India (CTRI).

Reporting Standards and Planning Tools for Psychology Research

Choosing the right reporting guideline early makes your methods section easier to write and easier for reviewers to check. Match the guideline to your design and confirm the current version on its official site.

Design or task Standard or tool Example topics
Systematic review PRISMA for reporting. Register the protocol on PROSPERO if the review has a health-related outcome, or on OSF if it does not. 4, 91, 95, 115
Randomised or cluster-randomised trial CONSORT 119, and 9, 11, 63, 110 if participants are randomly assigned
Qualitative interviews or focus groups COREQ or SRQR 8, 12, 17, 46, 52, 87
Observational studies (cross-sectional, cohort, case-control) STROBE 7, 20, 44, 59, 77, 93
Preregistration OSF (Open Science Framework) Any quantitative topic, especially experiments such as 3, 22 and 54
Sample size planning G*Power Surveys, correlational studies and experiments

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are good research topics in psychology?

Good topics name a population, a psychological construct and a relationship or outcome that can be measured or explored, for example passive social media use and anxiety symptoms among undergraduates. Pick one from a subfield you understand, then check that participants, tools and ethics approval are realistic.

  • How do I choose a psychology research topic?

Choose a subfield, identify a problem, review recent literature, find a gap, define the population and variables, pick a method, check feasibility and ethics, then turn the idea into a research question and confirm it with your supervisor.

  • What are good psychology research topics for college students?

Choose narrow, low-risk topics that use validated scales or simple experiments, such as sleep regularity and attention (topic 2) or gratitude journaling and exam stress (topic 39). Keep one institution, a short measurement window and no clinical participants.

  • What are good psychology thesis and dissertation topics?

They need a clearer research gap, a justified design and an ethics plan. Examples include a behavioural activation programme for low mood in college students (topic 9) or teachers' beliefs about generative AI tools (topic 21). Your department's format decides the scope.

  • What are good PhD research topics in psychology?

PhD topics usually link several studies, such as developing a measure, testing it and evaluating an intervention. Topics 116 to 121 show that scale. A bigger topic is not automatically better; it must still be answerable within your time and access.

  • What is a psychology research question, and how do I write one?

It asks how or whether constructs relate in a defined population, for example: how is passive social media use associated with anxiety symptoms among undergraduate students? Write it after choosing the population and variables.

  • What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative psychology research?

Qualitative research explores experiences and meanings through interviews or focus groups and thematic or phenomenological analysis. Quantitative research measures variables and tests relationships or differences with statistics. Choose by your question, not by which sounds more scientific.

  • How many variables should a psychology research topic have?

There is no fixed number. Two variables suit simple relationships or comparisons; three allow a mediator, moderator or control. Add variables only when your theory and sample can support them.

  • How do I find a research gap in psychology?

Read recent reviews and the limitations sections of recent studies, then look for untested populations, settings, measures, mechanisms or conflicting results. Confirm the gap by searching APA PsycInfo, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar and Shodhganga before you commit.

  • Can I use these topics directly for my dissertation?

Treat them as starting points. Adapt the population, context, variables and method to your institution, then check the literature, feasibility and ethics, and get supervisor approval before writing a proposal.

  • How can Zonduo help with psychology research?

Zonduo supports topic selection with research gap analysis and feasibility checks, and research proposal, literature review, methodology, data analysis, thesis and dissertation, paper writing, editing and journal publication guidance.
