Shodhganga does not publish a list of research topics. It is India's open repository of full-text PhD theses, run by the INFLIBNET Centre under the UGC. To find a topic, search it by keyword, discipline, university or supervisor, read the abstract, objectives and "scope for further research" of the closest theses, log them, and write one sentence on how your study differs. This page shows each step and gives you a free worksheet to record the evidence.
| Quick facts | |
|---|---|
| What it is | Open-access repository of Indian doctoral theses (electronic theses) |
| Run by | INFLIBNET Centre, under the University Grants Commission (UGC) |
| What is inside | Thesis PDFs, usually chapter-wise, with title, researcher, supervisor, department, university, year and keywords |
| Companion repository | Shodhgangotri, which holds synopses filed at registration |
| Cost | Free to read, download and cite |
| Not inside | A ready-made topic list, journal papers, or work not yet uploaded |
Shodhganga is the national repository where Indian universities deposit the electronic theses of their PhD scholars. UGC research-degree regulations require the final soft copy to be sent to INFLIBNET for hosting, so a thesis normally appears after the degree is awarded. How soon it appears depends on the university.
Each record carries the thesis title, researcher, supervisor, department, university, year of submission and keywords. Most records offer the thesis as separate chapter PDFs: title page, certificate, abstract, chapters, bibliography and annexures. That makes a Shodhganga thesis easy to read in the order that matters, which is covered in the fourth section below.
Yes. Theses are open access for reading, downloading and citing as references. Reuse still follows copyright and the repository's terms, so quote with a citation, paraphrase in your own words, and never lift a chapter. A research thesis from Shodhganga is evidence of what has been done. It is not text to copy.
People search Shodhganga with very different expectations. This is what each search usually means and what you actually get:
| What People Type | What They Usually Want | What Shodhganga Gives |
|---|---|---|
| shodhganga research topics | A topic idea | Titles of theses already completed. |
| shodhganga research, shodhganga research papers | Papers to read | Full doctoral theses, not journal papers. |
| Shodhganga project topics | Project concepts for a degree program | PhD-level work; use the discipline pages below for course projects. |
| Shodhgangotri research topics | Topics that other people have started | Synopses submitted before the thesis is completed, at the registration stage. |
| Shodhganga research topics PDF, PDF free download | A ready list | No official topic list exists; each thesis can provide PDF chapters, and our worksheet below replaces the list. |
| PhD thesis download, dissertation PDF download | A thesis file | Free PDFs of electronic theses for academic use, subject to repository access and copyright terms. |
Follow these steps and you will see the real shape of your topic instead of scrolling thousands of titles.
Write the variable, the population, the place and the method as separate words. "Digital payments, small retailers, Kerala, survey" searches better than a full title.
Browse by university, then department, when you want to see what one institution has produced. Browse by subject when you want a discipline overview. Use advanced search when you want precision: filter by title, subject, author or keyword, choose a condition such as "contains" or "does not contain", combine two filters, set results per page and sort by relevance.
Researchers name the same idea in different words, so a single phrase misses relevant theses.
A guide's supervised scholars are listed when you click on their name. If you plan to work with that guide, you will see what they already accepted.
Open only the abstract and findings first. Download the rest only for theses that survive that first read.
| Search Pattern | Example (Education) | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|
| Core concept alone | teacher training | Shows the size of the field. |
| Concept + synonym | teacher education OR teacher preparation | Catches different wording. |
| Concept + population | secondary school teachers | Finds the same group studied elsewhere. |
| Concept + place | Kerala, rural districts | Tests the geography of your gap. |
| Concept + method | mixed methods, case study | Tests whether the method has been used. |
| Spelling variants | behaviour / behavior, organisation / organization | Indian and international spellings both appear. |
University portals, the INFLIBNET search page and your own department's thesis shelf are all valid starting points. Whichever you use, record the exact search string and the date. Both are required for the worksheet.
This is the question behind most searches for Shodhganga research topics: has somebody already done mine? A topic is not "taken" because a similar title exists. It is taken only when the same question has been answered for the same group, in the same setting, with the same method. Use this four-point duplicate test on every thesis you find.
Same variables or constructs?
Same people, sector or geography?
Same design, sample type and analysis?
Same period, or data that is still current?
| Matches On | Verdict | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| All four | Taken | Change the question. |
| Three | Close | Change one dimension, such as population or period. |
| Two | Neighbour | Cite it as your base and build on it. |
| One or none | Open, for now | Confirm against recent journals before you commit. |
Write your topic as one question that names the variable, population, place and method.
Run six to ten search strings on Shodhganga, using the patterns above.
Log every close thesis: title, researcher, guide, university, year and link.
Score each one on the four points and give it a verdict.
Check the last three to five years of journal literature: Scopus, Web of Science, UGC-CARE-listed journals and Google Scholar. A thesis can reach Shodhganga years after the work was done.
Check what is in progress: search Shodhgangotri synopses, your university's own repository, and ask your guide what is already registered in your department.
Write your difference statement in one line: "Unlike [researcher, year], who studied [A] in [B] using [C], this study examines [your difference]."
Most scholars find that the eight to ten closest theses are enough to see the pattern. Stop when new searches stop returning new neighbours. A clean Shodhganga search does not prove a topic is free; it only proves it is not in the uploaded theses.
A search record sheet — the exact search strings to run by discipline and university, a log for each thesis you find with its year, guide and university, and a comparison column for recording how your topic differs from each one. Take the completed sheet to your Doctoral Committee as evidence the topic is not duplicated.
Download the Worksheet (.docx) →Reading a PhD thesis end to end for a topic search wastes weeks. Read it like an examiner looking for what is missing. Work through each thesis in this order and note one line per section.
| Read | Extract | Gap Signal |
|---|---|---|
| Abstract | Problem, sample, main finding | Is it even close to your question? |
| Objectives and hypotheses | Exact variables | Variables you do not see |
| Methodology | Sample size, tools, analysis | Method not used for your population |
| Findings | Results and limits | Weak or inconsistent results to test again |
| Conclusion and scope for further research | What the author left open | The same suggestion repeating across theses |
| Bibliography | Sources used | Foundational works to read first, then verify in the originals |
Then build a one-page table of the "further research" suggestions from your eight to ten theses. When several theses leave the same question open, that is a real gap. When only one does, treat it as a hint and test it against journals.

Gaps tend to sit in one of seven places: population, geography, time period, variable, method, theory, or sector. Name which one yours is. A topic that only changes the city is thin. A topic that changes the population and the method is defensible.
Check the submission year, because older theses can be perfectly sound foundations but may sit on outdated data or policy. And pair each thesis with recent journal papers, since a thesis is examined by evaluators and approved by the university, but it does not go through journal peer review. Always cite what you use. Paraphrase, never paste, and run a plagiarism check before you submit.

A method not yet used with your age group; the same intervention in a different board, medium or district; teacher outcomes rather than student outcomes.
Digital payments or investing behaviour in a new region or occupation; a post-pandemic period for a question last studied earlier; small firms instead of listed companies.
A state-level or district-level version of a national question; household data instead of aggregate data; a policy that changed after earlier theses were written.
A statute or regime amended since earlier theses; a comparison with a second jurisdiction; enforcement or implementation rather than the text of the law.
Your discipline not listed? The method above works for any subject. Search, log, score, and write the difference statement.

Shodhganga is the right place to find what has been done. It is the wrong place to decide what you should do. Be aware of what it cannot tell you:
Registered work and theses not yet uploaded are invisible. Shodhgangotri synopses and your department help here.
Approval depends on your university's rules and your Doctoral Committee, not on what a repository holds.
A thesis does not tell you which journals care about the question, or what indexing they carry.
A gap you cannot fill with accessible data and your timeline is a limitation, not a topic.
Check recent journal papers before you copy any design.
Different wording can hide the same question, and similar wording can hide a different one.
This is where an outside review saves months. Zonduo can read your shortlist and your worksheet, point out where a thesis overlaps your question, and suggest which angle is open before you write your synopsis. Once your topic is final, plan where your research could be published. Learn how Q1 journal publication works on our Q1 journal page, or explore our journal paper publication support .
They are the subjects of the PhD theses already uploaded to Shodhganga. Shodhganga does not publish a separate topic list; you read the existing titles to learn what has been done and what is missing.
No. It hosts full doctoral theses. Course-level project topics are a different level, so use the discipline pages above for those.
There is no official topic-list PDF. Each thesis is free to download as PDF chapters, and the free Shodhganga Topic Search Worksheet above is the document that helps you decide a topic.
Browse by university and department or by subject, or use advanced search with title, subject, author and keyword filters. Open your supervisor's record to see earlier scholars.
Run six to ten search strings, log the closest theses, score each on variables, population, method and time, then check recent journals and Shodhgangotri. Write one line on how you differ.
It is the companion repository for synopses filed by scholars at registration. It shows work that has started but may not yet be a thesis.
Yes, as a cited source for background, methods and findings. Paraphrase it, cite it properly, and check key claims in the original sources.
Yes, for academic reading and citation. Do not copy text without attribution.
They are examined and approved by the university, but they do not go through journal peer review. Pair them with recent journal papers.
It depends on the field. Older theses are fine as foundations, but for fast-changing subjects check the last three to five years of journal literature before you claim a gap.
Search your concept plus population and place, then read the worked directions under Research Topics by Discipline and test each one with the four-point check.
Yes, if the setting, population or method genuinely differs, you cite the earlier work, and your guide approves. A change of city alone is rarely enough.
Send your one-line topic and your completed worksheet. Zonduo will tell you where your topic overlaps existing Shodhganga theses and which angle is open.
